The Functions and Benefits of an EORI Number

November 6, 2024
Registering as an Importer of Record (IOR) can be a complex process, but the benefits certainly outweigh the costs — especially when you partner with re:TRADE.

Whether you’ve been handling your own cross-border shipments in and out of the EU or you are considering expanding into the region, you will likely have encountered the term “EORI number”. This is a comprehensive guide to what an EORI number is, why and when you need one, and how to get one quickly and simply.

What is an EORI number?

An EORI number, or an Economic Operators Registration and Identification number, is a unique identifier assigned to businesses that engage in the import and export of goods to and from the European Union, even when they are using a third party for clearance. EORI numbers are required whether the business is established in the EU or elsewhere.

The EORI system was established to streamline European customs processes and enhance the security of international trade by tracking the movement of goods in and out of Europe. EORI numbers are used by customs authorities to quickly and easily identify economic operators and facilitate smoother customs clearance and compliance. The EORI system is also used to assist with qualifying for trade agreements and claiming preferential origin under the terms of the EU-UK Trade Cooperation Agreement, which entered into force in May 2021 following Britain’s exit from the EU.

When do you need an EORI number?

As is the case with many of the terms of compliance associated with international trade, there isn’t really a straightforward answer to this question. However, broadly speaking, any business involved in the import, export, or transit of goods in or out of the EU will need an EORI number to maintain compliance with customs regulations and ensure uninterrupted trade operations.

Other scenarios that require an EORI number include, but are not limited to:

  • Making any kind of customs declaration, including declarations for transit, temporary admission of goods, entry or exit summary, temporary storage, and more
  • Registering for an export license
  • Operating in multiple EU member states; if this is the case, then having an EORI number is essential for customs operations in each of these countries

There are some instances where an EORI number is not required, although these are typically limited to scenarios where you are moving goods exclusively for personal use o when you are not moving controlled goods.

What are the benefits of an EORI number?

Registering for an EORI  number is essential for businesses seeking to move goods in or out of the EU. Ensuring that your business is compliant with the EORI system has the following benefits:

  • Simplified, streamlined customs clearance. This can reduce delays, improve cost-effectiveness, and elevate your customer service
  • Approach compliance with confidence. The EORI system is designed to ensure that businesses comply with EU customs regulations and requirements; maintaining compliance is a surefire way of sustaining smooth operations and maintaining peace of mind
  • Access trade facilitation programs. In some cases, an EORI number can provide access to trade facilitation programs and benefits within the EU

How do I get an EORI number?

As we mentioned earlier, both EU and non-EU businesses are required to use an EORI number to orchestrate the movement of goods in and out of the EU. For the purposes of this article, this section focuses on how to get an EORI number if your business is not based in the country you’re moving goods to or from.

The actual process of applying for an EORI number will vary depending on the regulations of your home country. However,  that does not mean that you have to figure it on your own.
